Life Flight flies directly to the scene for trauma and medical calls for 70% of our flight volume. However, the other 30% of our flights are interfacility transfers. Many of those transfers are for patients requiring specialized medical equipment and specially trained medical professionals for their specific needs. That's where the teams at Memorial Hermann & Memorial Hermann Childrens's Hospital come in. Their Pediatric, Neonatal, & Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) Transport Teams are comprised of Nurses, Perfusionists, and Respiratory Technicians. The Neonatal Transport Team uses a self-contained, isolette equipped stretcher, which is built for use in our Life Flight EC145s. This stretcher features its own O2 supply, power supply, monitoring capability, IV Pumps, and ventilator. No other helicopter flight program in Southeast Texas flies Neonatal patients. Our IABP Team goes with our helicopters using a specially designed mount to hold the Balloon Pump on board the helicopter. Again, we are the only helicopter air medical service in Southeast Texas to perform balloon pump patient flights. All of these transport teams train with Life Flight Crews for safety & skills cross-training. Many of the patients flown by the Specialty Transport Teams go directly to the Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, or the Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center locations, although we conduct transfer flights all over southeast Texas.
